0.1) General Notifications
0.2) Calorimeter R&D Status
[1] General Notifications
[1-1] Annual Report
S.Iwata is preparing a draft for the JLC part of the annual
report. Those who have some nice pictures of hardware and
people to show, hand them to him.
[1-2] International Collaboration on Physics and Detectors (S.Iwata)
It is necessary to enforce international collaborations.
Since there are a lot of common R&D issues which are independent
of any particular accelerator design, it is highly desirable
to establish a mechanism to promote world-wide exchange of
information and discussion.
Such an organization should be designed to work positively,
regardless of where the linear collider will be built
eventually.
As for individual detector R&D's, on the other hand,
it is more realistic to start them in regional collaborations.
From this point of view, the on-going R&D's for possible
JLC detectors are to be internationalized first in collaboration
with ACFA membership countries and then to be further extended
as appropriate.
In the course of the ACFA working group formation
mentioned later, the former form of international
collaboration is also being pursued.
There shall be five to six representatives from each of
the three regions: Asia, Europe, and North America.
Their primary mission is to organize world-wide information
exchange, summary of R&D issues, and reviews, etc.
On the Asian side, we are now in the process of representative
selection, being led by S.Komamiya (ICEPP, Tokyo).
The first meeting is expected in the ICHEP conference
period.
As for the latter form of regional collaborations,
there was also a request from Prof.Zheng (ACFA Chairman)
to start the linear collider working group as soon as
possible.
S.Iwata, being the working group chair, is nominating
contact persons/organizers for the ACFA Joint Linear
Collider Working Group.
It would take some more time to have workshops yet,
but the organization is proceeding smoothly.
T.Matsui is in charge of secretarial works to contact
and exchange information with potential organizers.
Their reactions are very positive!
The following is a list of currently available names
for the working group contact persons/organizers:
Chair Iwata, Seigi (KEK)
China Kuang, Yu-ping (Tsinghua Univ.)
Japan Matsui, Takayuki (KEK, Working Group Secretary)
Korea Kim, Sun Kee (Seoul National Univ.)
Philippines Bacala, Angelina M (Mindanao State Univ.)
Taiwan Hwang, W.-Y.Pauchy (National Taiwan Univ.)
[2] Calorimeter R&D Status (Y.Fujii)
[2-1] Calorimeter Reassebly
The modifications of the test calorimeter are finished and it now
has a tile structure and looks like the figure below:
+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+ Each set now consists of 5x5
| | | | | | separate tiles each bolted to
| | | | | | a plastic backing.
+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+
| | | | | | It took about 2 hrs to assemble
| | | | | | each plane.
+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+
| | | | | | 50 planes were build at Tsukuba
| | | | | | University, while the remaining
+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+ 30 at Kobe University.
| | | | | |
| | | | | | Scanning of photon yield is
+-----+-----+-----+-----+-----+ under way and is expected to
| | | | | | finish soon.

[2-2] A Beam Test
A Beam test is scheduled from mid. June to July 1st (at least
11 days + cosmic ray runs).
The main purpose of this beam test is to study, for the tile structure,
a) resolution and e/pi, etc.
b) tower boundary effects
c) on-fiber effects.
Special care will be taken this time for tile calibrations:
1-2 days for muon beam
1-2 days for cosmic ray
Because of time limitation, only the 8-to-2 configuration is planned
to be tested currently.
