Subject: Your posting concerning ROOT

Hi,

i am currently loged in at some uncompfortable guest account and have
problems posting ... so here is my answer to your root question as a
mail ... in case you find it helpfull, please post it to the news group.

The precompiled versions of ROOT are compiled for RedHat Distribution.
Those already include the very new kernel and the libc Version 6.
This you will sea, if you make a strings root.exe or od -h root.exe

Since SuSe uses the old (and possibly more stable) version with libc 5,
and the corresponding old ld.so.1 the root executable is not recognised
as executable and a somewhat crazy error message is produced.

To circumvent this problem, change to RedHat or recompile ROOT. Since
eg. H1/DESY has an agreement with SuSe and will install SuSe on all their
PCs Rene and Fonds might agree in producing yet another binary
(they are supporting 17 different OS/compiler, which commercial products
supports that many OS ?, one more might be possible...)

Ciao
Thomas
