the current version of ROOT runs on all Linux distributions
using libc5.x. In a few weeks time we will have RH5 and will
start ROOT support for glibc (in addition to libc5.x).
If you want a reliable production system stay with 4.2.
If you want bleeding edge go for RH5.0. General audience should
probably go for RH5.2 (or something like that) when it comes in
a few months.
Kernel version is not an issue for ROOT (can even be some 2.1.xx).
Cheers, Fons.
