Notes on a meeting of the co-chairs, Montpellier 14/11/03

  1. WE PROPOSE A MEETING OF THE WORLDWIDE ORGANISING COMMITTEE AT THE SLAC WORKSHOP, 7-10 JANUARY, WITH PHONE IN. TO TAKE PLACE AT 14.00 HOURS PACIFIC TIME.
(To John Jaros; will you be able to set this up for us please? We still need to pick the day.)
  2. Rolf Heuer and George Hou joined us for a discussion of the Worldwide detector R&D group.

We recall that there are currently two separate kinds of detector activity:

The whole-detectors have been designed and modelled by members of the regional studies. It is important that work on them continues until a funded Linear Collider Laboratory calls for proposals for the final experiments - which will come from international consortia.

The sub-system R&D is being done by specialised collaborations, many of which are inter-regional. The Worldwide detector R&D group was set up to encourage these collaborations, to keep them in touch with each other, to list them on the web and to identify missing R&D activities which need to be started up. Results from the collaborations are being fed into the development of all of the whole-detector designs.

One of the successful activities of the R&D group has been to organise worldwide video meetings on detector topics on the day before a regional workshop; most recently Calorimetry at Montpellier. Vertex detectors will be dealt with at Mumbai in December; Tracking at SLAC in January.

WE PROPOSE THAT, AFTER LCWS PARIS, THESE VIDEO MEETINGS SHOULD BE INCORPORATED INTO THE REGIONAL STUDIES as their Calorimetry, Vertexing or Tracking parallel sessions (in turn - as they have been).

WE ALSO ASK THE R&D GROUP TO REVIEW THEIR CHARGE AND MEMBERSHIP - reporting to our meeting at the SLAC workshop in January. (N.B. Present R&D group membership is Hwanbae Park, Hitoshi Yamamoto, Yoshiaki Fujii, Keith Riles, Jim Brau, Gene Fisk, Rolf Heuer, Ron Settles, Chris Damerell).

  3. WE PROPOSE THAT LCWS WORKSHOPS SHOULD CONTINUE AT APPROXIMATELY 18 MONTH INTERVALS. Regions will organise their local workshops in between - perhaps missing one of their local cycle when they host the LCWS. WE FURTHER PROPOSE THAT THE SIX MEMBERS OF THE WORLDWIDE OC FOR A REGION WILL CONSULT WITH COLLEAGUES TO AGREE THE VENUE FOR THE LCWS AND TO PROPOSE THE DATE (to be approved by the Worldwide OC, after checking clashes with other events.) If agreed, Jim Brau will start this process for the next LCWS in North America, September/October 2005.
  4. LCWS Paris; programme decisions:
Yours ever
Hitoshi, Jim, David
