Nov 14, 1998: jp-TkDesk-1.1-2a: two official bug fixes: saveall.fix, trashdir.fix. The first one is pretty much serious as you can see from the official statement by Chistian Bolik, the creator of TkDesk.
Sep 21, 1998: jp-TkDesk-1.1-1a: the latest Japanized version.
Aug 19, 1998: jp-TkDesk-1.0-2a: fixed year 2000 problem.
May 17, 1998: jp-TkDesk-1.0-1a: the latest Japanized version rebuild with pre-DR3.
Feb 27, 1998: jp-TkDesk-1.0-1a: the latest Japanized version build with DR3alpha4.
Dec 16, 1997: jp-TkDesk-1.0b5-1A: revised to correct a problem with the mail tool, since the mail header flashing function is incompatible with Japanese extension: It malfunctions when there is any mail in the incoming mail box with Japanese characters in its header part. jp-TkDesk-1.0b5 is now compatible with Tcl7.6/Tk4.2 patch level2.
Dec 6, 1997: jp-TkDesk-1.0b5-1A: the latest Japanized version build with DR2.1update6.
Jul 13, 1997: jp-TkDesk-1.0b4-1A: the first RPM version with Japanese extension.
May 13, 1997: TkDesk-1.0b4: the first version with Japanese extension preapared as a tar ball.

A japanization patch:

tkdesk-1.1+jp.patch

was created to allow viewing and editing of Japanese text.

How to Build TkDesk from SRC

The TkDesk RPM building procedure is described in its spec file:

jp-tkdesk.spec

The point is to apply the above JP-patch and compile the patched source files with CC_OPTS='-O -DKANJI -DKINPUT2'.
You can rebuild the RPM using its corresponding SRPM as:

# rpm --rebuild <somewhere>/jp-TkDesk-1.1-2a.src.rpm

How to Install TkDesk

First install a shared version of the japanized tcl7.6/tk4.2 combo:

# rpm -Uvh <somewhere>/jp-tcltk-7.6p2_4.2p2-2b.ppc.rpm

if you haven't.

Otherwise, go straight ahead to the installation of TkDesk:

# rpm -Uvh <somewhere>/jp-TkDesk-1.1-2a.ppc.rpm

In order to input Japanese characters, you have to have kinput2 started.

Customizing TkDesk

Examples of customized configuration files can be found here.

If you have xfontsel contained in X11R6-contrib installed, you may want to replace

/usr/local/lib/TkDesk/Editor.tcl

by Editor.tcl.tar.gz to change editor fonts on the fly:

# tar -zxvf <somewhere>/Editor.tcl.tar.gz -C /

You cannot, however, save the change at this moment. In this sense, this feature is still experimental.

Known Problems

Oct 2, 1998: a problem reported by Etsushi Kato <ekato@ees.hokudai.ac.jp> at Hokkaido Univ.
If you have previously installed an English version of TkDesk, you may get the following error:

Error while executing action from "Popups":
can't read "tkdesk(editor,kanjiFont)": no
such element in array
This is due to your $HOME/.tkdesk/System, which is presumably created by the English version, missing definitions of kanji fonts.
In this case, do the following:

$ cd
$ mv .tkdesk .tkdesk.keep
$ tkdesk
This will create a new Japanized version of $HOME/.tkdesk. If you want to restore any customization you made to the configuration files in $HOME/.tkdesk, do in addtion:

$ mv .tkdesk .tkdesk.new
$ mv .tkdesk.keep .tkdesk
$ cp .tkdesk.new/System .tkdesk/
You need to restore your changes to the "System" file by hand, if any.
